5-year-old’s battle with leukemia highlights importance of bone marrow donors

Sophia Kappen is a patient at Cincinnati Children’s battling an aggressive form of leukemia.

Family and friends in her Florence, Kentucky, neighborhood are showing their support by decorating mailboxes with hundreds of orange and purple ribbons.

Sophia’s mom is hoping hundreds more will join the Be The Match registry and become bone marrow donors.

“You really can save a life, and it’s hopefully going to be my 5-year-old daughter’s,” said Amy Kappen, Sophia’s mom.
