Immediate Results After Alexis Shapiro’s Weight-Loss Surgery

Alexis Shapiro, a 12-year-old from Texas who came to Cincinnati Children’s for weight-loss surgery, is out of the hospital and improving quickly. Alexis has a rare metabolic condition called hypothalamic obesity, which causes her to feel constantly hungry.

Last week doctors at Cincinnati Children’s performed a sleeve gastrectomy, which reduces the size of a patient’s stomach. The surgery received worldwide attention. Since then, Alexis has been feeling signs of fullness when she eats and has already been taken off the insulin that controlled her type 2 diabetes.
