Local Business Raises Money for Sickle Cell Research

An Avondale business is working to create awareness of Sickle Cell Anemia while raising funds for research at the same time.

Stags Barber Shop and Beauty Salon held an event this week to draw attention to the blood disorder which affects hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells that  carry oxygen throughout the body.

James Page with Cincinnati Children’s said some of those funds will go to raise public awareness and encourage testing.

“You look at black men and physicians, and although we really believe we’re a healthy group of individuals, we don’t get to the doctor when we need to. We don’t get our checks when we need to,” said Page.
