First teen to get experimental heart stem cell transplant at Cincinnati Children’s

Caleb Sizemore, an 18-year-old with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, is receiving an experimental cardiomyopathy treatment called Cardiosphere-derived stem cell therapy. The treatment involves infusing donor stem cells into the patient’s heart.

“This therapy actually offers us the opportunity to reverse some of that scar tissue and if we could reverse the scar tissue in theory we could keep the heart tissue normal indefinitely,” said John Jefferies, MD, MD, MPH, FAAP, FACC, director, Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy.
