Medicine Might One Day Fend Off Some Ailments of Old Age

It might not make you look any younger, but a new discovery may someday make you feel better as you age. A German researcher working at Cincinnati Children’s appears to have found a way to make stem cells act young again.

So far, testing has only been performed on mice stem cells, but Dr. Hartmut Geiger has identified a key protein in the aging process. Geiger’s collaborator has developed a drug that can reverse the activity of this protein to a level found in normal young cells.

In theory, it might one day fend off some of the ailments of old age. Geiger cautions that initial results with mice are promising, but he doesn’t know yet if it will work in people. It may be 10-20 years before testing on humans is finished.
