Scared of Needles? Cincinnati Children’s to the Rescue

Cincinnati Children’s and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel are working to take some of the complication out of inserting needles into blood vessels, alleviating some of the common mistakes (not to mention fear) associated with needles.

They hope to automate the process with a device that uses ultrasound, machine vision and a robotic needle-dispenser to make placing a central venous catheter a push-button affair. The system will not deploy the needle if it cannot sense a suitable vein at the target location, minimizing complications. The process would allow most clinical staff, including paramedics, to carry out a needle placement in under two minutes.
