Texas Girl With Rare Weight Disorder Surpassing Doctors’ Health Expectations

Alexis Shapiro, a Cibolo, Texas, pre-teen who had a gastric sleeve procedure at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center to correct a rare weight disorder, is doing even better than doctors expected and has lost 37 pounds since her operation.

“She has more energy, and she can move better and faster now, and her type 2 diabetes is gone,” said Alexis’ mom, Jenny Shapiro.

Alexis’ surgery reduced the size of her stomach and curbed her appetite by targeting messages to her brain.
