World Prematurity Day is Nov. 17

November 17 has been designated as World Prematurity Day. It is designed to raise awareness of the risks of premature birth — now the leading cause of infant mortality in the United States.

An estimated one in eight babies are born prematurely according to the March of Dimes. Babies who survive often suffer from lifelong medical and developmental disabilities. But what causes prematurity?

Louis Muglia MD, PhD, and  James Greenberg, MD of the Center for Prevention of Preterm Birth explain how their work aims to prevent pre-term birth. Read more about their work in this month’s issue of Cincinnati Family Magazine.
