This week’s pin is full of fun summer learning ideas brought to us by Megan Wallgren from FamilyShare.com.
Summer is in full swing with long, hot days spent outside and late nights filled with lightening bug chases and not a care in the world. School is likely the farthest thing from many minds, but what can you do to make sure your child is ready to go back in August? Megan gives us twelve fun ideas for keeping your child’s mind sharp during the summer.
Reading is a given, and many public libraries have summer reading programs and incentives for kids, such as the Power Up program at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. Kids can work at their own pace to read whatever they find interesting during the summer, and encouraging them to do so can help keep those skills sharp for the return to school and help foster an interest in reading outside of the classroom.
Megan also suggests letting older kids help in the kitchen to work on their math skills. Going to museums, the zoo, or classes at the library are other ideas to learn in unique and fun environments during the summer.
Creating a summer collage is another easy learning idea that we love. Save the ticket stubs from movies, ball games and other trips and let your child glue them to a poster to create a summer collage. You can include photos, drawings, craft projects and even brochures or pamphlets from places you go over the summer. Keep adding to the poster and by the end of the summer you can go through as a family and remember each event. Encourage your child to talk about what they learned or liked and you’ll be exercising their creative minds and memories.
