2020 Radiology Summer Research Students Complete their Summer Projects with Presentations

Each year, the Radiology Department supports four University of Cincinnati (UC) medical students to participate in our Radiology Summer Medical Student Research Program.

Four UC medical students in between their 1st and 2nd years of medical school are each paired with a Cincinnati Children’s Radiology faculty mentor to assist on a radiology research project for 8-10 weeks during the summer. Students gather and analyze data while learning about pediatric imaging. Typically, the students also spend time rotating throughout the various areas of the department shadowing our faculty. Unfortunately, this year’s COVID-19 restrictions eliminated this opportunity. Although this was disappointing for both the students as well as their faculty mentors, the Department made accommodations for the students to work on their projects remotely. They remained positive, adapted, and worked diligently throughout the summer.

The students presented their research projects to our faculty and fellows last week. I think you’ll agree that they showed remarkable poise, clarity, and expertise.

Typically, the faculty mentors will help these students submit abstracts of their research to scientific conferences where they will have the opportunity to present on the national stage. In addition, the students and faculty mentors will ultimately publish their research in a scientific journal.

The student’s online research presentations are listed below.

Derek Shu, BS
Machine Learning to Identify Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) Tip Position from Radiology Reports

Abigail Crothers
Ultrasound Determination of Pediatric Thyroid Mass

Isabella Liu

Pulmonary Vascular Disease in Cystic Fibrosis

Michael Frankland, BA

US Hepatorenal Index as an Indicator of Pediatric Fatty Liver Disease

Dr. John M. Racadio, author; Glenn Miñano, BFA, editor; Meredith Towbin, copyeditor
