The holidays are a busy time of year for everyone, but they also happen to be an even busier time for radiologists. Every year during the week following Thanksgiving, the Radiologic Society of North America (RSNA) Annual Meeting is held in Chicago, Illinois. This is the single largest radiology conference of the year and one of the largest medical meetings in the world. Over 50,000 people have attended the meeting each of the last several years. The RSNA is an opportunity for radiologists to learn, connect professionally, and hear presentations on some of the most cutting-edge research in radiology.
While the RSNA covers the broad range of radiology (adults and children, all imaging techniques), many Cincinnati Children’s radiologists attend the meeting every year as there is excellent pediatric content among the thousands of posters and presentations. The annual meeting is also a chance for our radiologists to learn about new techniques and discoveries in adult imaging that we might be able to apply to our children here at Cincinnati Children’s.
In addition to providing education, the RSNA also serves as an important source for grant funding for early research projects. Our radiologists have been able to take advantage of that funding to help them start and support innovative research aimed at improving patient care.
Radiologists from Cincinnati Children’s don’t just attend the RSNA meeting; they provide educational opportunities for the other radiologists that come to the RSNA from around the world. Our pediatric radiologists are recognized for their expertise and are often invited speakers for continuing medical education presentations. Others have created educational exhibits and learning content that is available throughout the meeting, and several present their research at the meeting every year.
At the annual meeting in 2013, Cincinnati Children’s radiologists gave 20 presentations and presented four educational exhibits. Topics ranged from continuing education on fetal and neonatal imaging to research talks focused on imaging quality and technique. Our radiologists are frequently recognized for their contributions to the RSNA, and at the 2013 meeting, several Cincinnati Children’s radiologists won awards for their talks and educational exhibits.
This year’s RSNA annual meeting is currently underway with several of our radiologists in attendance. It looks like it’s going to be another great year for Cincinnati Children’s Radiology in Chicago!
