Cultural Champions in Radiology: Bridging the Gap between Cincinnati Children’s and the World

In collaboration with this week’s diversity theme, we’d like to introduce you to Cincinnati Children’s Cultural Champions, a relatively new team committed to understanding and cooperating with all cultures from around the world and their individual needs. The committee has been devoted to taking the extra steps to ensure everyone and anyone who walks through our doors, no matter where their journeys began, is welcomed and greeted with any cultural requirements. These necessities might range from certain expected behaviors, such as who to address with decisions in the family, to dietary needs, such as religious fasting holidays and dates.

The reason why our Cincinnati Children’s Radiology Department finds the Cultural Champions so immensely helpful is because we attend to both outpatients and inpatients. There are literally hundreds of patients being seen everyday by radiology and, as you can imagine, they arrive from all over the country and the world. Within the same hour there might be a group of patients from Cincinnati, a handful from other states, and a few from other countries. This means there are a plethora of backgrounds and upbringings to address all at once, and having a resource like the Cultural Champions definitely aids in bridging that gap and brings us closer together.

You will not notice our Cultural Champions outright. They do not sport any form of identification other than their department badge; but fear not, they are always around and continue to strive for better accommodations for each individual’s essentials. Please feel free to notify any of the staff members if a cultural need arises that has not been addressed and the Cultural Champions for that area will work hard to remedy the situation for the future. With 2016 already upon us, the world is getting closer and closer, and Cincinnati Children’s continues to strive to treat your family like our family.
