An MRI can be a scary place for a kid. Not only is the exam loud with lots of banging and buzzing noises, but your child must be contained for a period of time in a tube-like machine. This can be very stressful and frightening for you as well, but Cincinnati Children’s offers multiple options to ease your child through the process, making the exam easier on everybody.
Earplugs: Our first option for distraction and protection are earplugs. If you or your child’s exam allows time for you to fall asleep, this may be the easiest and most desired choice.
Radio (FM/AM): Like many other MRI facilities, we offer radio to help distract from the noises of the MRI machine. Our station availability varies from location to location. Feel free to request a specific radio station, but keep in mind it may not tune in.
Music CD: If having your own music would help your child through the exam, then bring in a CD and the tech will play it throughout the scan. Only CDs can be played. No ipods, ipads, phones, etc…
Movies (DVD): Unlike many other MRI facilities, we have video goggles that enable your child to watch a movie during the MRI. We also welcome you to bring in your own DVD from home. All we ask is to please make sure it is an actual DVD (not a BluRay disc) and is appropriate for Cincinnati Children’s.
TV: TV is our newest addition to the media options. We offer basic cable. Other options may have to be considered if the desired channel is unavailable. (Click here for a list of channels)
Considering these options before arriving at your appointment will help speed up the preparation time and shorten the overall time in the MRI department. Please be patient and forgiving if one of these choices is out of order. Sometimes media malfunctions do occur and we apologize for any inconveniences.
