From Around the Corner to Around the Globe: Focusing on Diversity

Just spend a few minutes listening or talking to some of the families in the Radiology Department waiting room at Cincinnati Children’s.  You may hear a variety of languages spoken or accents from different parts of our country. It is not uncommon to have a family from the United Arab Emirates sitting next to a family from Wisconsin. When we see that a child is from Athens we have to check if that’s Athens, Greece, or Athens, Ohio. This is because the goal of Cincinnati Children’s is to ensure world-class experiences and care for our patients and families from throughout the nation and around the globe.

We are so fortunate to have a world-renowned children’s hospital in our own backyard, not only providing excellent care to the children and families in our local community, but also to the many patients and families that come from out of state or the country. With such diversity, Cincinnati Children’s strives to continually promote an environment that recognizes and values the personal and cultural differences of all people. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment for patients, families and employees where diverse backgrounds are considered and respected as we work together and improve outcomes. This kind of inclusive and supportive atmosphere is achieved through continual development and education around cultural competence. Through various opportunities, Radiology employees learn about diverse social, cultural, linguistic, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of patients, families and fellow employees and support resources that Cincinnati Children’s offers.
