Welcome Clinical Radiology Fellows, Class of 2019, Part 1

Please welcome our new Clinical Radiology Fellows, Class of 2019. We have seven new Radiology fellows, with one fellow continuing for another year in Musculoskeletal Radiology and one Neuroradiology fellow arriving on July 24. Read their self-introductions below!

“Hello! My name is Dr. Tiffany Tavernier and I’m originally from a small town 30 miles from Austin, called Lockhart, TX. I love everything Texas! Also, due to the fact of being from the BBQ capitol of TX, I’m also a self-proclaimed BBQ snob ;).

I’ve attended Meharry Medical School in Nashville, TN. I did a general surgery internship at Vanderbilt Medial Center in Nashville, TN, and then went to Tulane University Medical Center to for my diagnostic radiology residency in New Orleans, LA.

I love trying new restaurants, cooking, traveling, spin classes, and hot yoga. On my days off, you can find me at a splash pad with my son, trying out new recipes or at whatever festival may be going on that weekend.

I really love being a radiologist in that we consult with all services. We get to be a part of the majority of patients’ medical plans, which in turn gives us the ability to help a lot of people. There are many modalities and disease processes that we have to know, so you also can never get bored – and who wants to be bored :).”

Dr. Murat Kocaoglu received his medical degree and finished his residency from Gulhane Military Medical School in Ankara, Turkey. Dr. Kocaoglu chose to enter the field of radiology because he “liked to be involved with more technology and by this way I would be involved in the whole body systems.”

He’s originally from Turkey and before coming over to the United States, he lived in Northern Cyprus. Cyprus is a small and peaceful island in the Eastern Mediterranean, just south of Turkey.

Dr. Kocaoglu is married and has three children, ages 12, 14 and 16. His family is currently with him in the US. His favorite pastimes are watching soccer and the NBA.

Dr. Austin Dillard received his medical degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis, TN is where he finished his residency. When asked about why he chose radiology, his answer was, “It has flexibility and no other field requires such a broad knowledge of pathology.”

Dr. Dillard’s hometown is Tupelo, MS, better known as the birthplace of Elvis Presley. He has a wife and a daughter who is obsessed with the movie Elena of Avalor. Some of his hobbies are playing with his daughter and watching movies on the couch. He loves all kinds of pizza and the last book that he read was Packing for Mars, by Mary Roach.

Photo: Dr. Reem Hasweh and her family

Dr. Reem Hasweh earned her medical degree from the University of Jordan. She also completed her residency at the University of Jordan. She is continuing her training in the field of radiology with a year fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s.

Dr. Hasweh grew up in Amman, Jordan. Amman is the capital and most populous city of Jordan. It is a major tourist destination in the region, particularly between Arab and European tourists. Her family still lives in Amman, Jordan.

When not working at the hospital she spends her time with her husband and her twin boys, Adam and Yousef. The twins are only 20 months old.

Her hobbies are traveling, walking, reading, writing, watching movies and hanging out with family and friends. The last place she visited was Dubai. She said, “There are many different activities you can do there.” The last book she read was The Forty Rules of Love and the last movie she saw was Jumanji.

Dr. Brendan McCleary earned his medical degree at the University of Rochester, NY. He did an internship at the Internal Medicine Program, Boston Medical Center, MA and completed his residency at the Lahey Hospital and Medical Center (Boston, MA).

Growing up he lived on two coasts: Northern California and the Washington, DC area. His wife is from Cleveland, Ohio, and they are happy to be closer to family now.

Dr. McCleary explained, “I chose radiology because it also allows me to help a great number of people. It also offers an enormous breadth of practice. I know I’ll never be bored! Pediatric radiology in particular gives the opportunity to reclaim some of the patient contact lost in the adult radiology world. As a parent, I know the difference it makes to have a good experience with a pediatrician.”

Dr. McCleary loves spending time with his wife Sarah and their two year-old son, Elliot. He recently started playing his guitar again, after a long hiatus. Reading books is a passion for him; he tries to read two books a month.

Photo: Dr. Nathan Fagan

Dr. Nathan Fagan received his medical degree from NEOMED (formally NEOUCOM) in Rootstown, Ohio. For his residency he attended Aultman/Mercy Radiology program in Canton, Ohio.

He actually started out as a OB/GYN resident with aspirations of doing Gyn Onc, but fate has a way of changing one’s path in life. During his second resident year he developed a rare allergic reaction to the medical gloves he was wearing. They couldn’t find alternative gloves for him to wear at the time, so with help from his mentors he decided to change medical fields. He remembered loving the imaging parts of Gyn Onc, so he switched into radiology because it felt like a good fit. Eventually, his father, who worked with major shipping accounts at UPS, was able to find gloves he could wear. Dr. Fagan decided to try and get back into procedures by doing Pediatric IR (Interventional Radiology).  Looking back he said, “Radiology has been fantastic and switching was probably for the best!”

He’s from Ohio and around the Akron/Canton area, the northeast part of the state. Canton is home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Akron is home to Goodyear Tire, because of its long history of rubber manufacturing and is nicknamed the “Rubber Capital of the World.”

Dr. Fagan is a new father. His son, Kylian James Fagan, was born on 7/17/18 at 5:48pm. Both mom and son are doing well.

When asked about any hobbies that he has, his response was, “My favorite hobbies are video games and dabbling in electrical engineering.  I love video games because they tell interesting stories, can be intellectually stimulating, and allow me to talk to friends more regularly.  What I mean by dabbling in engineering is trying to solder stuff together to make things.  Small things like arcade sticks or circuits which may serve functions around the house. I am hoping I can take this hobby and work on device development as an attending.  However, who knows how much of of these I’m going to be doing with a new little one running around?”

Photo: Dr. Deborah Brahee

“Hello, my name is Dr. Deborah Brahee and I am a Minnesotan, originally growing up in a suburb outside of Minneapolis in the cold and snowy tundra. My husband and I met in high school.  We have a dog who keeps us quite entertained.  We love to travel and enjoy hiking, although don’t have the chance as often as we would like.

I had a previous career that became mundane and decided to become a medical physician.  I chose radiology as a career because it is amazing!  I went to medical school intending to become a radiologist.  Medical school was at St. George’s University in Grenada, a beautiful Caribbean island with wonderful people.  I did my residency in surgery at the Brooklyn Hospital and radiology residency in Pittsburgh at Allegheny General Hospital.

I am excited to be here with you all at Cincinnati Childrens!”

Stay tuned for Part 2 of Welcome Clinical Radiology Fellows, Class of 2019, where we get to know the new incoming Neuradiology fellow and find out which fellow is staying for another year under Musculoskeletal Radiology.
