It is with a mix of sadness and joy that we say goodbye to one of our beloved MRI technologists, Laura Hanselman. Because of the unique and often high-pressure situations that we find ourselves in here at Cincinnati Children’s, we tend to grow closer than just co-workers; we are a family. Laura has graced the Radiology Department with her top-notch imaging skills and her infectiously positive attitude for almost two decades, but it is now time for her to move onto a new adventure.
Laura started working in radiology when it consisted of only a few scanners. She has watched, experienced and helped develop the growth of the department throughout the years. She was here when our Intraoperative scanner got installed in the Operating Room; she was here when our engineers invented our Neonate Intensive Care Unit (NICU) scanner; and she was here when our imaging research department went from a minor basement scanner to a mutli-scanner unit with several locations.
To top it all off, she personally has had a hand in developing most of these projects, which still positively affect patients, parents, and employees today. If that was not enough, she has trained countless employees and students, dabbled in Quality Improvement and represented Cincinnati Children’s at imaging conferences across the country. To say she will be missed by us all would be an understatement. Her shoes will be near impossible to fill.

To emphasis how committed Laura has been to this hospital over the years, we need only to look at the miles she has put on her personal vehicles. Driving a whopping one hundred miles a day (roughly an hour and ten minutes each way), she would sacrifice time and gas because she loved Cincinnati Children’s so much.
With two growing children and a farm to take care of at home, she has made the difficult decision to leave one love (her Cincinnati Children’s family) to have more time with another love (her personal family). Starting next school year Laura will become the school nurse at her daughters’ elementary school.
We are sad to lose such a wonderfully bright person, but joyful for her to take those well-deserved steps to spend more time with her family. She has affected us all (patients and parents included) more than anyone will ever know and she will truly be missed. The MRI techs will surely share lovely tales of her for years to come. Cincinnati Children’s, especially the Radiology Department, wishes Laura all the best on the next journey waiting around the corner.
