Introducing our technologists who have made the move from x-ray to CT

Did you know that the majority of our CT technologists started at Cincinnati Children’s as x-ray technologists? Ten out of 14 to be exact! In the Radiology Department, we have always been firm believers of growing from within whenever possible. Not only are our x-ray technologists already familiar with our hospital and our mission, but they are also familiar with our department and our staff, and most importantly, they are familiar with pediatrics! Pediatric experience is a unique talent and skill set and is highly valued at Cincinnati Children’s given that our patient population is primarily pediatrics. It’s what we do.

Meet two of our CT technologists below.

Hello, my name is Kara Fulcher.  I live in Mason Ohio, but I grew up just north of Montgomery, Ohio, in Symmes Township and graduated from Sycamore High School. I have an associate degree in Radiological Technology from Sinclair Community College and bachelor’s degree in
Health Science from Norther Kentucky University.

I have been employed by Cincinnati Children’s since 2008, working in x-ray at the Burnet Campus mostly on third shift.  When a third shift CT position became available in February, I decided to make the move across the hallway to CT.  I appreciate the opportunity to learn a new modality and I enjoy the look of confusion when people see me in CT instead of x-ray after
all these years.

Prior to my career in Radiology, I worked in medical device manufacturing of surgical instruments and orthopedic implants, which led to my interest in healthcare.  It has always been important to me to have a career where I have the opportunity to help people, and Cincinnati Children’s is a great place that allows me to make a difference and help “change the
outcome” in our patients’ lives. 

I have one daughter who lives with her husband in Simpsonville, Kentucky.  They are expecting their first child in January. In my spare time, I like to travel, garden, go to concerts and spend time with family and friends.

Hello, my name is Veronica Owen, but everyone calls me Voni. I graduated from the Radiologic Technology program at Xavier University in 1998, 18 years after I graduated from high school.  I was the valedictorian of my RT program.        

I am from this area but would really like to move to Florida where it’s nice and warm all year long. Maybe one day I’ll do that.         

I’ve been married and divorced twice and have seven children and two grandsons. I like hanging out with family and friends and laughing a lot!!!         

I recently won a little cash when I was on TV on the Cash Explosion show…yay me…it’s all gone!         

I have worked at Cincinnati Children’s for 21 years. I worked as a tech at the outpatient locations mainly doing second shift. Last year I changed it up a little and decided to take a position in CT.  I miss all the friends that I had made over the years, but on occasion, we still get together…and laugh! Everyone in CT has been so welcoming and willing to teach this old dog new tricks and I so appreciate all of them.
