Dr. Michael J. Gelfand Retiring

Michael Gelfand, MD, began his pediatric training at Cincinnati Children’s in 1973. At the University of Cincinnati (UC) he completed a second residency in nuclear medicine. He was one of the nation’s first pediatric nuclear medicine physicians. This coming Friday, January 18, he will be retiring.

His career in nuclear medicine spans over 40 years. He has been instrumental in defining the anatomic and functional imaging of sickle cell disease, biliary atresia, urinary tract infections, osteomyelitis, renal obstruction, neoplasms, and many other pediatric diseases.

Dr. Gelfand has served as president and on the board of directors of the Society of Nuclear Medicine for 10 years. He has written 126 journal articles and 31 book chapters. He has been an invited lecturer or visiting professor around the world.

Being the primary teacher of pediatric nuclear medicine over the years, he has taught numerous fellows and residents. The Department of Radiology will be honoring him with a retirement party. Even though he’s officially retired this coming Friday, Dr. Gelfand will still be around working on research projects.
