It’s good to be recognized. This month, two of our Imaging Research Center (IRC) faculty, Dr. Jason Woods and Dr. Laura Walkup, were honored to make the front cover of the Annals of the American Thoracic Society. The IRC is a research division of our Radiology Department.

“The Annals of the American Thoracic Society (AnnalsATS) publishes original clinical, epidemiological, and health services research related to respiratory, sleep, critical care medicine, and population health.” Drs. Woods and Walkup’s study called “Cyst Ventilation Heterogeneity and Alveolar Airspace Dilation as Early Disease Markers in Lymphangioleiomyomatosis” graced the front cover of the journal.

In layman’s terms, they are working on a research study using imaging techniques that would detect early regional disease of Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). LAM is a rare disease associated with cystic destruction of the pulmonary parenchyma and chronic respiratory failure. This would be valuable for patient care and clinical trials, since there are trials underway to determine if early intervention can prevent disease progression.
