This year the interventional radiology (IR) fellows from Cincinnati Children’s and the University of Cincinnati were able to attend their annual IR Training Workshop. Last year it was canceled due to COVID-19.
The Interventional Radiology (IR) Training Workshop is sponsored by Cook Medical and led by Dr. Ram Chadalavada and Dr. John Racadio. The goal of the workshop is to provide our Cincinnati Children’s and UC IR fellows (we have recently extended the invitation also to IR residents and medical students) an opportunity to practice the “tips and tricks” of IR. These techniques are ones that they may have learned in a textbook or by assisting their attending IR physician but likely have not performed solely by themselves. This training offers the opportunity to practice procedures, troubleshoot complications, and make decisions “like an attending” before being out practicing on their own.
Working in an operating room environment, Cincinnati Children’s and UC attendees, under the guidance of Drs. Chadalavada and Racadio, perform complex IR procedures such as vascular stenting, angioplasty, embolization, and IVC filter placement and retrieval. This type of training will hopefully educate and increase the confidence of our future IR physicians by simulating real-life IR cases and procedures while also getting accustomed to various catheters, wires, and IR devices. The specialized equipment was generously provided by Cook Medical.

Glenn Miñano is a media specialist in the Department of Radiology, providing graphic design, photography, printing, video services, and administration of the department’s online properties. His works have been published in several medical articles, such as the American Journal of Radiology and the American Institute of Ultrasound. He has been providing these services to the Radiology Department since 1996.
