Welcome to our 2023 Summer Medical Research Students

Post Date: June 13, 2023
Welcome to our 2023 Summer Medical Research Students

Each year, the Radiology Department supports four University of Cincinnati (UC) medical students to participate in our Radiology Summer Medical Student Research Program.

Four UC medical students in between their first and second years of medical school are each paired with a Cincinnati Children’s radiology faculty mentor to assist on a radiology research project for 8 to 10 weeks during the summer. Students gather and analyze data while learning about pediatric imaging.

Jasmine Haraburda

My name is Jasmine Haraburda, and I am from Hilliard, OH (a suburb of Columbus). I graduated from Case Western Reserve University with a B.S. in biology and minors in chemistry and philosophy.

I decided to study medicine because it combines my interest in the sciences with my desire to improve the health of others.

Dr. Kim Cecil is my faculty mentor. This summer, I will be investigating the impact of environmental neurotoxicants on pediatric neurodevelopment and brain structure via statistical and image analysis of cohort data.

In my free time, I enjoy hiking, painting, reading, and trying out new restaurants.

Derek Rubadeux

Derek Rubadeux is from northern Ohio (Hudson, OH). He has fond memories of spending time at Cedar Point Amusement Park, a short drive from Hudson, during his childhood. For his undergraduate studies, Derek attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated with a B.S. in science pre-professional studies.

“I chose medicine because I want to develop skills to lead, innovate, and solve problems in the healthcare field. I am passionate about using technology to improve patient care. Problemsolving in a team-based environment is essential to providing the best possible care.”

Derek’s faculty mentor will be Dr. Cara Morin. The research project he will be working on is “Retrospective review of liver imaging following Fontan procedure.” This study will review the effectiveness of the screening algorithm implemented by Cincinnati Children’s Fontan Management Clinic in 2018. We hope this research will improve surveillance recommendations for post-Fontan patients.

In his personal time, Derek enjoys playing soccer, watching the Cincinnati Bengals, and exploring Cincinnati.

Arjun Mathur

Arjun Mathur is from Mason, Ohio. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a B.A. in public health studies. After graduating, Arjun was drawn back to Cincinnati because of its charm and his desire to be close to family and friends.

“I decided to pursue a career in medicine because I love working with people and medicine offers the unique opportunity to impact individual patients and populations as a whole. I hope to continue conducting research as a physician to influence positive changes in patient care.”

His faculty mentor is Dr. Andrew Trout, and the research project he will be working on is “T1 signal intensity ratio variability based on sampling strategies in the pancreas.”

His hobbies are watching and playing sports (basketball, tennis, golf, soccer, Bengals), listening to live music, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.

Alex Elma

Alex Elma grew up here in Cincinnati, and after high school was lucky enough to participate in Cincinnati Children’s High School Summer Internship, where he shadowed Dr. Rebeccah Brown while learning about her work in the Trauma Department and Chest Wall Center. His experiences both as a patient and summer intern at Cincinnati Children’s drove him to pursue a career in medicine. He attended the University of Dayton, earning a double major in pre-medicine and psychology. While in college, he drove down to Cincinnati to work as a scribe in the ED/UCs of Liberty and Mason Children’s and later worked as a dermatology medical assistant in Dayton.

Alex currently attends Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine and is excited to be back at Cincinnati Children’s for the summer as a clinical research assistant in radiology. He will be working with Dr. Rob Fleck on his project titled “Dynamic Computational Modeling of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Down Syndrome.”

In his free time, Alex likes to spend time outdoors with family/friends, play pickleball, run, and cheer on the Cincinnati Bengals.

To these four young students, we say, “Welcome to radiology!” May your summer be fruitful and rewarding.
