Summer break is supposed to be a time for relaxation and going on vacation, but for these five University of Cincinnati College of Medicine second-year medical students, it’s work. For nine weeks, these smart individuals are paired with a Radiology faculty member, helping them obtain research data pertaining to pediatric radiology studies.

Alan Hu is paired with Dr. Kathy Emery and Dr. Patrick Whitlock. Alan will be helping on their research, titled “Abnormal Pelvic Vessels by the Acetabulum on Pre-Operative Patients for Hip Dysplasia Surgery.”

Lindsay Darkins is paired with Samuel Brady, Ph.D. Lindsay will be helping on Dr. Brady’s research, titled “Recursive Learning Algorithm for Segmentation Software.”

Boma Afonya is paired with Dr. Robert Fleck. Boma will be helping on Dr. Fleck’s research, titled “Gastric Residuals in Anesthetic Patients.”

Emily Engelhardt is paired with Dr. Jonathan Dillman and Dr. Andrew Trout. Their study will be on “Liver Tumors in Fontan Patients.”

Nathan Northern is paired with with Dr. Jonathan Dillman and Dr. Andrew Trout as well. Their research study will be based on “Clinical Utilization of Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography.”

These summer medical students will be gathering all their research data until August 3. They will be expected to give a presentation to the Radiology Department on their research project as part of their summer program.
