Host Bo McMillian sits down with child and adolescent psychiatrists, Dr. Desiree DiBella and Dr. Brian Kurtz, to talk about how kids understand fear and ways parents can help them process.  

“Being brave does not mean that you’re never scared.” says Dr. Desiree DiBella.   

Fear is natural and is something that we all will experience at some point in life, but for kids, it can be overwhelming. Take a listen to learn what fear is and some common ways it can show up in a child’s body. Our experts also share strategies parents can use to help kids overcome fear and how they can model a healthy fear response to kids. They also explore positive self-talk, its impact on a child, and when parents should consider seeking professional help.

About the author: Desiree DiBella, MD

Desiree DiBella, MD, is a pediatrician in the Division of General and Community Pediatrics and a child and adolescent psychiatrist in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Her areas of interest include primary care of underserved children, integrated mental health within primary care, and medical education. She is an attending physician at Hopple Street Neighborhood Health Center, Cincinnati Children’s Norwood, and Fairfield Primary Care Clinic.
